New Infoblox Solution Helps Service Providers Keep Up with the Demands of Social Media and Mobile Data

Brings Unparalleled Performance, Reliability and Security to the Mobile Internet

Infoblox Inc. (NYSE: BLOX) today announced availability of a new automated network control appliance that enables Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to deliver a fast and trusted Internet experience to their social media hungry users around the globe.

Domain name system (DNS) resolution is a foundational Internet infrastructure service required to connect users to online applications. If DNS systems are down, the connections grind to a halt. With the increasing growth of users and devices on the Internet accessing social media and other applications, DNS query demand volume is rapidly exponentially rising.

To help distribute the load and provide rapid DNS query responses, ISPs have traditionally relied on banks of general-purpose servers running open source software. This approach has performance, security and reliability limitations. It also requires costly manual IT administration time due the scores of servers requiring individual maintenance and upgrades. Infoblox addresses these legacy system shortcomings with the new Infoblox 4030 DNS Caching Appliance.

“Social media and mobile data are driving an explosion of DNS queries,” says Kevin Dickson, Vice President of Product Management at Infoblox. “Service providers are struggling to maintain an infrastructure that can handle the growing query volume to deliver the best online user experience and protect against malicious threats without cutting into their already thin operational margins. With superior performance, scalability, security, and manageability, Infoblox’s new appliance is designed to directly address these challenges and deliver a fast and trusted end user Internet experience.”

Infoblox Delivers a Dedicated, Fast and Trusted DNS System

The dedicated, carrier-grade Infoblox 4030 DNS Caching Appliance can achieve more than one million DNS queries per second; this is more than 25 times the performance of most legacy solutions. With Infoblox’s dedicated appliance approach and unique Grid technology™ that links multiple Infoblox appliances together, ISPs can field billions of DNS queries per second, easily extend robust DNS systems to the network edge for resilient service delivery where demand is the highest, and efficiently maintain the systems with central management capabilities.

With Infoblox Grid technology, administrators can implement changes, such as a software upgrade, with the touch of a button across multiple appliances, saving significant administrative time. To achieve this kind of performance and manageability with most legacy solutions would require 25 times the number of devices and an army of administrators to maintain.

And, DNS technology built into the new Infoblox 4030 delivers protection against:

  • Malicious Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks by hostile entities that attempt to overload the network to the point of failure.
  • “Cache Poisoning” attacks when a system is virtually hijacked, customers can be unknowingly directed to fake web sites and user/system credentials stolen.

With built-in detailed reporting and blacklisting capabilities, the 4030 systems also automate early detection of certain attacks and disable URLs of attacking servers. Additional security measures built into the appliance, which has a hardened chassis and a custom operating system to prevent root access, include DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC) and active monitoring of incoming network traffic to ensure traffic integrity.

DNS is essential to keeping end users and their smartphones, tablets, laptops and businesses connected to the Internet and favorite applications,” said Zeus Kerravala, Principal Analyst with ZK Research and Affiliate Analyst with the Yankee Group. “To address an ever-expanding volume of DNS queries, service providers can no longer rely on brittle legacy solutions. They must upgrade their infrastructures to achieve new levels of performance, scalability and security or they risk losing end customers frustrated by a poor online experience.”
