An Asian Mobile Communications Provider
A mobile operator gears up to handle 300,000 DNS queries per second with 11 centrally managed Infoblox DNS appliances in 3 cities.
The Customer
This large global communications provider and mobile operator in Asia is a national leader in 3G services, offering a range of mobile broadband services including 3G mobile data and international roaming.
The Challenge
The DNS infrastructure within the mobile network was heavily reliant on open-source BIND software that lacked management tools and required frequent hands-on upgrades and patches to the underlying Sun hardware and operating system—and to the open-source software itself. The operations team also found it difficult to implement high-availability failover in a repeatable way, and they needed to dedicate skilled technical staff for repetitive, manual administrative tasks to keep the servers running.
As DNS traffic was projected to increase significantly over the coming two years, a major upgrade to the server platform was required in order to maintain acceptable web and video application latency and to maintain customer satisfaction. Traffic levels at each node are expected to exceed 300,000 DNS queries per second over the next two years.
The Solution
Infoblox deployed 11 4000-series DNS appliances in 3 cities in order to place DNS-caching resources closer to the customer base for optimized response time, and to distribute the DNS traffic load adequately. An additional authoritative DNS server was also delivered, serving the ISP business. All Infoblox appliances are managed centrally via the Infoblox Grid, which automates upgrades and enables reliable, automated failover of DNS servers to remote datacenters. An Infoblox Reporting Server provides historical trend analysis for the capacity planning team, complying with national data-security and privacy laws by keeping all operator and user data inside the country.
The Results
DNS capacity is now closer to the customer, leading to better Internet response times, and the Infoblox DNS infrastructure has eliminated the manual updates the legacy system required, freeing key technical staff for more strategic work. Built-in high-availability features in the Infoblox Grid provide automatic failover and as a result, more reliable service. The system can scale to meet future needs, and the combination of centralized management visibility and Infoblox reporting capabilities provides better data for capacity planning, better security, and better compliance with privacy requirements.
