First you determine if you can ping the DNS server from your workstation and\/or the user\u2019s workstation. If yes, then you know the network path to the DNS server is fine.<\/p>\n<p>If the problem has to do with the answers coming back from the DNS servers, then you have to perform a packet capture or look at the syslog. If you decide to do a packet capture, you could configure port mirroring on any switch that is in the data path to the DNS server. This takes time and you need to be local to the switch.<\/p>\n<p>What if you can capture data on the Infoblox appliance? Sound good? With an Infoblox DDI appliance you can perform a packet capture.<\/p>\n<p>Instructions for configuring packet capture:<\/p>\n<p>1. Log into the GUI.<\/p>\n<p>2. Navigate to Grid &#8211;&gt; Grid Manager &#8211;&gt; Members &#8211;&gt; Toolbar &#8211;&gt; Traffic Capture. The Traffic Capture feature is a powerful tool available in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infoblox.com\/products\/nios\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>NIOS<\/strong><\/a> GUI for troubleshooting network issues directly on the appliance.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-752 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/live-infoblox-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/traffic-1.png\" alt=\"Traffic Capture Feature on NIOS GUI\" width=\"600\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.infoblox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/traffic-1.png 600w, https:\/\/www.infoblox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/traffic-1-300x166.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3. You will need to add a member in which to capture packets. Click on the Interface drop down menu to select the interface to capture traffic. If you do not, the packets captured will not have any source or destination MAC address information in the display of the packet.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-756\" src=\"https:\/\/live-infoblox-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/traffic-5.png\" alt=\"Traffic Capture Feature on NIOS GUI\" width=\"600\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.infoblox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/traffic-5.png 600w, https:\/\/www.infoblox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/traffic-5-300x104.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>7. Click on the \u2018play\u2019 button to start the packet capture. Using the Traffic Capture feature, you can analyze <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infoblox.com\/products\/dns-traffic-control\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>DNS Traffic Control<\/strong><\/a> mechanisms to ensure your DNS queries are being routed and resolved correctly.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-757\" src=\"https:\/\/live-infoblox-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/traffic-6.png\" alt=\"Traffic Capture Feature on NIOS GUI\" width=\"600\" height=\"481\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.infoblox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/traffic-6.png 600w, https:\/\/www.infoblox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/traffic-6-300x241.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>8. At this point you can close this window and go make any changes on the GUI and then reinvoke the packet capture screen. The packet capture will still run until the duration time of 1800 seconds or stopped before the end of the duration by hitting the \u2018stop\u2019 button.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-758\" src=\"https:\/\/live-infoblox-blog.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/traffic-7.png\" alt=\"Traffic Capture Feature on NIOS GUI\" width=\"600\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.infoblox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/traffic-7.png 600w, https:\/\/www.infoblox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/traffic-7-300x240.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>9. Click on the member and then click on the \u2018Download\u2019 button to download the capture file. The file will be in a .tar.gz format. Uncompressing the file and the name will be traffic.cap. You can now import this file into Wireshark to view. For advanced troubleshooting, you can also access the Infoblox <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infoblox.com\/glossary\/command-line-interface\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Command Line Interface<\/strong><\/a> to perform diagnostic commands and gain deeper insights into DNS operations.<\/p>\n<p>10. Here is a screenshot of the Wireshark screen. The fully qualified domain name (ie FQDN) that was queried was www.cnn.com. As you can see there is some recursion going on between 10.60.22.233 and 52.119.40.100 to get the answer.
