Movember has been a prickly month. Prickly because growing the hair on my top lip as Australian summer arrives is tough business. But nowhere near as tough as having one of the men in my life succumb to a preventable disease, suffer alone with depression, get hijacked by prostate or testicular cancer or make the choice to take his own life.<\/p>\n<p>Three drivers have motivated me to keep growing the prickly face lace this Movember:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom:10px;\"><strong>Your generous donations.<\/strong>\u00a0Since 2003, funds raised by Movember have supported 1,250 projects globally to research and improve men\u2019s health issues. Movember has inspiring goals to meet through its donations, including to halve the number of deaths from prostate and testicular cancer, to halve the number of men experiencing mental and physical side effects from prostate and testicular cancer treatments and to cut male suicide rates by 25 per cent.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom:10px;\"><strong>The Infoblox Mo\u2019 team.\u00a0<\/strong>The Infoblox ANZ team participated in Movember with me and put in an outstanding fundraising effort. Our Mo Sista,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ACoAAAE4UbIBHf1yPVrfbZwPiJ4vjSKbQSM1Zyw\"><strong>Megan Bisson<\/strong><\/a>, pledged and walked 60 kms because mo\u2019 growing isn\u2019t her speciality. Why 60 kms? Because \u201c60\u201d represents how many men the world loses to suicide every hour of every day.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ACoAAAA25RQBPBmsXOTfEiS8tTKKijFq_388I4A\"><strong>James Wilson<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ACoAAAPe3doBrGWeadonsUMRRAyz3AGIJtrocs8\"><strong>Jasper Chik<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ACoAAAWUBzwB_mWFxuyQILjCas17wIQaaifTEoQ\"><strong>Chris Baddeley<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ACoAAADKWcEBnXQbISoHR8cUfIXWKfMMTITaQ5Y\"><strong>Justin Lo<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ACoAAAaP69cB-xfMHSR08ShVRiIbK6BXo_OcDM8\"><strong>James Ellerman<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ACoAAATaFNUBbShGz5XBE_h8Rnh6RyteFa2Ah-I\"><strong>Gabriel Khnanisho<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ACoAABr01X4BZHsd-0ij5G3AsUrhMQ0c_JeePjs\"><strong>Mauran Tharmachandirar<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ACoAAAAJgOMBxK6GfpUx35PASXnvDGe9oYHSOfA\"><strong>Simon Hoare<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ACoAAAGhvT8BcvaXESJ3nTvOJwJW4Vprx5rZolM\"><strong>Rob Partington<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ACoAAAbTjvgBSXf0VOPMpfT5m11TW76sqdQDytY\"><strong>Sam Chee<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0joined me in sprouting their own tea strainers. Our team efforts have raised $2,405. Together, we\u2019re making a difference.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom:10px;\"><strong>My granddad and dad.<\/strong>\u00a0Two of the most important men in my life developed, and fought, prostate cancer against the odds. My family and I are forever grateful for the experts, medicines and access to facilities which saved their lives. Knowing first-hand, what the battle against prostate cancer involves, it\u2019s important to me to join movement that helps improve the detection, treatment and recovery rates for male cancers. While men will still die from cancers, awareness and funded research means we can help slow the rate.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I&#8217;m in two minds about my mo\u2019 coming off today, but that doesn\u2019t mean I\u2019m filing the topic of men\u2019s health away until Movember 2021. Clearly, men\u2019s good health doesn\u2019t stop and start around a fundraising campaign. My personal commitment is to have a focus on men\u2019s health every day and I\u2019d love for you to join me with three easy actions.<\/p>\n<p>First, keep an eye on the men around you and, if you spot a bro\u2019 who is feeling low, reach out. Second, be brave and start that awkward conversation about how you\u2019re quietly freaking out about something mysterious happening inside your own body. Three, when a bloke starts telling you how\u00a0<em>he\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0feeling, notice your own discomfort, then take a deep (quiet) breath and settle in to listen.
