{"id":3503,"date":"2013-08-16T19:52:25","date_gmt":"2013-08-16T19:52:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/live-infoblox-blog.pantheonsite.io\/?p=3503"},"modified":"2022-10-19T16:33:38","modified_gmt":"2022-10-19T23:33:38","slug":"quot-no-user-serviceable-parts-inside-quot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.infoblox.com\/blog\/ipv6-coe\/quot-no-user-serviceable-parts-inside-quot\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;No User Serviceable Parts Inside&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I think we&#8217;ve all seen that text on consumer electronics before. \u00a0It means that if you crack open your TiVo or your Playstation, you shouldn&#8217;t expect to find a product designed for ease of maintenance or repair.<\/p>\n<p>The IETF should have slapped that sticker on DNSSEC, too. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Domain_Name_System_Security_Extensions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">The DNS Security Extensions<\/a>, which provide authentication and integrity-checking of zone data, are critical to securing DNS infrastructure. \u00a0But some implementations of DNSSEC seem to have been designed with the explicit goal of driving DNS administrators to drink. \u00a0With early BIND name servers, for example, signing a zone for the first time was a 12-step process (by my reckoning), and most of those steps involved the command line. \u00a0(Even with\u00a0<em>current<\/em>\u00a0Microsoft DNS Servers,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/ee649203(v=ws.10).aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">the situation<\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0still\u00a0much the same.)<\/p>\n<p>Providing more evidence that getting DNSSEC right is tricky,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.virusbtn.com\/news\/2013\/08_15.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Verisign yesterday apparently muffed a key rollover for the .gov zone<\/a>, rendering signed data in .gov unvalidatable. \u00a0That amounted to an inadvertent denial of service, but luckily one that affected only those organizations who care the most about .gov data.<\/p>\n<p>But my point isn&#8217;t that Verisign doesn&#8217;t know DNSSEC&#8211;they do, better than almost any other company. \u00a0My point is that even the pros can mess up, because DNSSEC is hard.<\/p>\n<p>Since the introduction of DNSSEC,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.isc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">ISC<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.infoblox.com\/?utm_source=blox-community&amp;utm_campaign=community-q2&amp;utm_medium=blox-community\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Infoblox<\/a>\u00a0and others have invested resources to automate DNSSEC to the extent possible. \u00a0That automation is, in my opinion, an absolute necessity when deploying DNSSEC. \u00a0You don&#8217;t want to have to follow\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/ee649203(v=ws.10).aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">a multi-step cookbook of dnscmd commands in order to roll over a key<\/a>\u00a0(yo, Microsoft!); you want to specify how often keys should be rolled over and receive a nice notification when the rollover completes.<\/p>\n<p>I hope that if you&#8217;re planning to deploy DNSSEC, you won&#8217;t be discouraged by Verisign&#8217;s little accident, just further convinced that an automated solution is the way to go.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I think we&#8217;ve all seen that text on consumer electronics before. \u00a0It means that if you crack open your TiVo or your Playstation, you shouldn&#8217;t expect to find a product designed for ease of maintenance or repair.
