As security teams scramble to patch affected systems, one thing is evident: enterprise patching is a marathon, not a sprint. The critical question isn’t just how fast you can patch, but how you contain the blast radius today while those patches are still rolling out. Check Point Research reported attempted exploitation against organizations around the world, while government agencies including CISA and the FBI issued urgent patching guidance. The picture is still developing, but the immediate priorities are clear.

In plain terms, PHP2Shell can let an unauthenticated attacker reach a vulnerable PHP server remotely and execute code, with no login credentials or user interaction required. For defenders, that means not only finding affected systems, patching or upgrading them, but also watching for suspicious activity across the attack path while remediation is underway.

How We Got Here

What makes PHP2Shell uniquely devastating isn’t just the flaw itself—it’s how AI was weaponized to exploit it. On its own, an unauthenticated memory flaw in PHP is a critical, but familiar, nightmare. However, the unprecedented chaos surrounding PHP2Shell was driven by threat actors deploying autonomous AI attack agents. By using AI to dynamically generate web application firewall (WAF)-evading payloads, identify exposed shadow infrastructure and execute zero-click compromises at machine speed, attackers completely removed the human bottleneck from the attack chain. AI turned a severe vulnerability into an automated, global land grab, shrinking the traditional patching window from weeks down to mere minutes.

PHP2Shell refers to two critical PHP core vulnerabilities, CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619. The memory-safety flaws create unauthenticated, remotely triggerable paths to code execution. Because the bugs are in PHP itself—not in one particular website or content-management application—the exposure can extend across many PHP-based services.

Wiz Research demonstrated remote code execution against WordPress, Drupal and Joomla deployments, and Cloudflare reported early attack attempts. Public proof-of-concept material has increased the urgency of remediation.

CISA urges organizations to update to PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 or 8.2.35. PHP 8.1 and earlier are unsupported, so those systems need an upgrade to a supported release. Consult the official PHP guidance and your distribution or application vendor for package instructions.

Frontier AI Changes the Practical Risk

The presence of a flaw does not tell us how difficult it is to exploit today. Wiz Research reports that the underlying flaws had been present for more than a decade, but turning them into working exploits required chaining multiple bugs and adapting to different memory layouts through repeated testing and debugging. Wiz says frontier models substantially reduced that effort, helping researchers develop and adapt working exploits across multiple applications.

Wiz credited models including OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol and Google DeepMind’s Gemini 4 Argon in its research. AI changes the economics of vulnerability research and exploit development. Complexity that once slowed exploitation may no longer be a dependable safety margin. For defenders, the takeaway is to close exposures faster, and to watch beyond the vulnerable host in case prevention misses something.

Why Perimeter Defense Alone Falls Short

Perimeter controls and isolated point solutions still matter, but they cannot close every gap in a PHP2Shell response. The vulnerability sits in PHP’s core: exploitation requires no credentials or user interaction, and patching every exposed system takes time. Teams need to pair perimeter defenses with exposure discovery, rapid remediation and visibility into activity across the network.

Zero-Click Execution: An attacker can trigger the vulnerability remotely without user interaction.

No Pre-Authentication: The vulnerable path does not require an account or valid credentials.

Patching Delays: Exploit details and scanning can spread faster than organizations can inventory, test and update every affected system.

How Infoblox Can Help Right Now

Responding to PHP2Shell takes more than a single control. Teams need to start by identifying externally exposed PHP and adding the asset context needed to route remediation. But while patching continues, what can be done to contain the blast radius and prevent lateral movement if a vulnerable PHP instance is successfully compromised?

While Infoblox cannot prevent the initial remote code execution (RCE) exploit payload from reaching the web server, its DNS security ecosystem (Infoblox Exposure Management, Infoblox Threat Defense™ and Kentik network intelligence and observability) provides critical post-compromise protection.

Here’s how the Infoblox Platform acts as a defense-in-depth backstop for PHP2Shell in four stages:

Stage 1: Find Exposed PHP and Identify the Asset

Start by identifying internet-facing assets running PHP, including systems provisioned years ago that are no longer top of mind. External Attack Surface Management (EASM), part of Infoblox Exposure Management, fingerprints the technologies running on internet-facing assets so teams can prioritize where to look first.

In a recent analysis across EASM-monitored tenants, fewer than 1 percent of detected PHP instances were at or above the fixed releases. About 62 percent were on end-of-life branches that require an upgrade to a supported version. The remaining 38 percent were on supported branches below the fixed version and require the latest point release. These figures provide an exposure baseline, not a measure of exploitation.

For assets that already report into Infoblox Universal Asset Insights™ through a connected provider, Universal Asset Insights can surface what the asset is, where it lives in the environment and who owns it, so the right team can prioritize and patch it instead of chasing an anonymous IP. EASM answers “what is exposed?” Universal Asset Insights helps answer “where is it, and who can fix it?”

Stage 2: DNS Layer Disruption of Malicious Activity while You Patch

After exploiting an unpatched PHP server, an attacker may try to establish a reverse shell and then use DNS for command and control, payload delivery or data transfer. Attackers routinely use an initial shell to download secondary malware, ransomware or persistence tools. Infoblox Threat Defense can help disrupt DNS-dependent steps for traffic protected by the service:

Reverse Shell: Outbound DNS queries to known and high-risk malicious command-and-control infrastructure can be blocked, which can interrupt a shell trying to phone home.

Secondary Payloads: Queries to malicious domains used to download additional malware, ransomware or persistence tools can be blocked.

DNS Tunneling: Behavioral analytics help detect suspicious DNS tunneling used for data exfiltration.

Disrupting DNS-dependent follow-on activity can limit what an attacker does after gaining initial access. The next stage looks at network traffic.

Stage 3: Use Network Traffic to Investigate What Happens Next

If an attacker bypasses a DNS control or establishes a foothold, the next question is what the affected server communicates with. North–south traffic shows communication between your environment and external infrastructure; east–west traffic can reveal lateral movement or unexpected access to internal systems. Both views matter.

Kentik, now part of Infoblox, adds real-time traffic intelligence to the investigation:

Baseline-based anomaly detection helps surface traffic that departs from normal patterns, including unusual north–south activity.

Custom Dimensions let teams tag traffic to or from their PHP server groups, making that analysis more precise.

Sudden changes in top-N traffic volumes by country or by ASN are a useful place to start when looking for unexpected external communication.

Historical flow data shows which systems communicated and when, and Kentik AI Advisor lets analysts explore flagged traffic changes using natural-language questions.

Where a malicious domain is not yet known to DDI or threat intelligence, traffic analysis can help close that gap by revealing the unusual communication itself.

When the evidence supports it, Kentik can support network-level actions such as a remotely triggered black hole (RTBH) or FlowSpec and send relevant information to a team’s existing security information and event management (SIEM) workflows.

Learn more about Infoblox + Kentik.

Connecting All the Signals to Understand Blast Radius

A traffic anomaly is more actionable when it can be tied to a real asset. When Kentik network intelligence and observability flags an IP address associated with unusual north–south or east–west traffic, responders can look up that address in Infoblox DDI to find the hostname and other available asset context. With that context, they can move from “this traffic looks unusual” to “this is the system and team to investigate.”

Each capability covers a different point in the response: EASM helps find exposed PHP, Universal Asset Insights can add asset context, Threat Defense can help block and detect malicious DNS activity, and Kentik network observability can help investigate traffic and potential blast radius. Used together in an investigation, they give teams complementary points of visibility rather than a collection of isolated alerts.

If You’re Not an Infoblox Customer Yet

The fundamentals apply regardless of which security tools you use:

Patch affected releases as soon as possible. For PHP 8.1 and earlier, upgrade to a supported release.

Confirm where PHP is exposed to the internet. Include forgotten or unmanaged services, containers and vendor products that bundle PHP.

Check for interim protection. Ask your WAF or CDN provider whether it has issued a PHP2Shell-specific rule. Treat that protection as temporary mitigation, not a replacement for patching.

Restrict systems that cannot be patched immediately. Per CISA guidance, take PHP-based systems offline until they can be updated. If that is not possible, restrict access and segment the service while you work to remediate it.

Map the blast radius. Determine what the PHP server can reach, what data and credentials are accessible and which adjacent systems could be affected if the server is compromised.

Monitor the wider attack path. Watch DNS and network traffic beyond the original PHP host. An attacker may move laterally, persist on a different device or use legitimate services for outbound activity.

Patch PHP2Shell

None of the controls above replace patching. Apply the fixed PHP releases, or upgrade from unsupported branches, using guidance from PHP and your operating-system, hosting or application vendor. CISA urges organizations to patch immediately, prioritizing internet-facing systems and taking PHP-based systems offline if they cannot be updated. A WAF can provide additional protection in the meantime.

Threat Intelligence as the Picture Develops

Threat reporting now includes mass scanning, public proof-of-concept activity and reported exploitation attempts. On October 26, 2026, CISA added both CVEs to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog. Infoblox’s PHP2Shell threat bulletin tracks evolving reporting and recommended defensive actions.

Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI), a part of Infoblox Exposure Management, keeps this picture current with evolving bulletins that pair context with recommended defensive actions. Analysts can use its workspace to connect vulnerability reporting to relevant threat actors, TTPs and IoCs, and to reprioritize exposure and response as evidence changes.

The Takeaway

PHP2Shell proves that identifying the vulnerability is no longer the hardest part of the job. In an era of automated threats, the real challenges are: “How is AI weaponizing this at scale?” and “When the perimeter fails, do we have the network visibility and tools to disrupt the attack before it spreads?”

Frontier AI may shorten the path from a longstanding flaw to a practical exploit. Organizations should respond by shortening their own path from discovery to patching—and by keeping visibility into DNS, north-south traffic and east-west movement while remediation is underway.

The Infoblox Platform provides organizations access to powerful capabilities across networking, security, visibility and AI-powered operations. Infoblox Exposure Management helps teams identify internet-facing PHP exposure, while Infoblox Universal Asset Insights adds available context about where those assets exist and who owns them. Infoblox Threat Defense can help block DNS-dependent C2 and payload-delivery activity while patching continues. Kentik network observability adds together network and asset context with real-time traffic intelligence to help investigate unusual communications and potential blast radius.

Patching closes the hole. The rest of the response is about finding what is exposed, limiting what an attacker can do next and seeing where activity goes if prevention falls short.

Last week’s disclosure of PHP2Shell triggered an immediate, global race against the clock to address the vulnerability.
